Historically, specialist Goldfish Societies in the UK had their own show standards. In June 1989, delegates from the Bristol Aquarists Society, AMGK, NGPS, and GSGB met to establish unified standards, enabling fish to be shown nationwide under the same criteria and providing breeders with a common goal. They agreed to use the GSGB's 1987 revised standards as a suitable basis from which to start.
It was agreed that the new Standards would be called “The Nationwide Goldfish Standards of Great Britain”.
